We had great hopes when we first read about the Texas Smokehouse BBQ in east San Jose. Reviews were generally good, and comments were encouraging. The location was a bit out of the way, but, since my wife now teaches school in that part of town, it became an option for picking something up on the way home from work.
Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. On Friday after school, she picked up Tri-Tip, hot links, and BBQ chicken. All of them were smothered in a totally sweet, very-un-Texas-like BBQ sauce; more like something you’d spoon over ice cream than use to complement a nice piece of meat.
Strangely enough, the Tri-Tip was cubed; I don’t believe I’ve ever hard BBQ served in that manner before. The net result, of course, was that it cooled rapidly, which did nothing to improve the “tough as shoe leather” texture and overcome the horrific BBQ sauce. The hot links weren’t much better. The BBQ chicken was dry, but almost (but not quite) tasty.
Not recommended.

Lack of good barbecue, that is the saddest thing I’ve ever heard…
Yesterday I had pork ribs that were nothing short of a religious experience. When I saw the slab they put before me, I thought I’d be taking half home.
I approached them with knife & fork, but the instant my fork touched the rib, they DISINTEGRATED completely. The meat just FELL off the bones - tender and completely delightful. The sauce they had been basted with was slightly too sweet, but nicely peppery.
So much for taking any home - I inhaled the whole slab before John could finish his French Dip sandwich!
Oh, this was at Houston’s Restaurant in Houston. Not cheap, but well worth it!
Today we had lunch at C&J BBQ in College Station. Always pretty good. Sometimes things get dry under the heat lamps, but today everything was good & moist. And it’s the only place I get fried okra! Mmmmm!
Come visit soon, Glen, & get a Real BBQ fix!
