Photographic Evidence

September 27th, 2007 · No Comments

The pigs were back this evening: a momma and her two little ones. Here’s the best picture I could get of the mother.
The two little ones were brown, but the sow was a full-blown black-haired razorback.

Wild Hogs

September 25th, 2007 · 1 Comment

No, I’m not talking about the movie. I’m talking about feral pigs.
In Southeast Texas, where I grew up, we call them javelinas. In much of the south, they’re called razorbacks. They were popular among hunters because the quality of the meat as well as the fact that they could be pretty dangerous in a fight.
Whatever [...]

Because Everything Tastes Better With Bacon

September 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Once, not very long ago, two guys named Dave and Justin discovered that they shared a mutual love of bacon. One night over dinner, they stumbled upon the idea of shakeable bacon and thus a product model was born. They have a very basic philosophy, which is that “Everything should taste like bacon.” You [...]

Grits

September 22nd, 2007 · 1 Comment

The September, 2007, issue of Southern Living magazine has what appears to be an extraordinary recipe for “Creamy Grits Casserole.” It includes both sharp cheddar and smoked Gouda cheeses, and I went to sleep last night dreaming about it.
(Note to self: must also try the “collard green pesto” soon.)

It’s not easy being green

September 21st, 2007 · No Comments

Chris has been cycling to work for a month now, but don’t worry; he’s figured out how to offset the loss of his carbon footprint because of it:
One of the funny side affects of the whole thing is most people think its really “green” of me to bike-to-work. But my motivation is purely selfish, I [...]

Big Ups to my home town of Snellville GA

September 18th, 2007 · No Comments

There is certainly some major redneck-ery going on here!
best line from the article:
“Known as “Rusty,” Redfern had gained some notoriety for his ability to function fully.”
Ah Snellville, you’ll always own a dark little corner of my heart!

Poké-Pod

September 13th, 2007 · No Comments

My son has added Linux to his iPod and is running a Nintendo emulator that lets him play Gameboy games. According to him, the hardest part is learning which spots on the touch-wheel correspond to the buttons on the Gameboy. Also, because the CPU on the iPod is heftier, the games run about 200% faster [...]

Got some spare time? How about scissors and a piece of paper? Then maybe you can create a work of art (thanks, Irvin!). Some really, really cool stuff there.

The Neighbors

September 9th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Our neighbors are rather quiet and unassuming. You see them and their kids all over the neighborhood, sometimes even sleeping underneath the trees in the back of the house. Here’s one of them inspecting our car.
In Texas, we would have suspected that she would dress out to only about 40lbs. of meat, and thus [...]

Almost, but not quite, BBQ

September 9th, 2007 · 9 Comments

We had lunch at Armadillo Willy’s Roadhouse Café in Gilroy yesterday. When I first moved to Silicon Valley in 2000, Armadillo Willy’s served as the “most acceptable” substitute for real (i.e., Texas-style) barbecue available. The focus is on beef, not pork; they serve brisket, not tri-tip (a peculiarly Californian cut of meat); and they smoke [...]
